My four year olds love playing with our bear counters and also love creating patterns. Here, I’ve combined the two and created free, printable Bear Counter Pattern Cards for my kids and yours to enjoy.
Bear Counter Pattern Cards develop patterning skills
The Bear Counter Pattern Cards give kids an opportunity to ask “What comes next?” and continue patterns.
Patterns are arrangements of items that repeat in a logical way. Research indicates that working with patterns has benefits for preschoolers. Pattern work helps them learn to make observations and predict what comes next. This builds foundational math and science skills. Additionally, predicting what comes next helps kids develop critical thinking and logic skills.
There is some indication that understanding patterns develops social skills and relationships in preschoolers. Taking turns and following routines are logical sequences of events, just like patterns.
Bear Counter Pattern Cards include several types of patterns
These Bear Counter Pattern Cards include several different types of patterns. This provides variety and also varying levels of difficulty. ABAB patterns, AAB patterns, AABB, and ABC patterns are all covered.
Additionally, there are pattern cards with blank spots at the end of the pattern and also in the middle of the pattern. This gives kids the opportunity to complete the end of the pattern and also fill in gaps within the pattern.
What supplies are needed to complete this activity?
To complete this activity, you’ll need a set of Bear Counters. We have this set (affiliate link).
If you don’t have bear counters, you might have another set of counters, beads, or buttons, that might work, too!
The pattern cards work left as a whole page or cut into individual cards. Additionally, it might be helpful to print them out on card stock or laminate them for heavy use.
