Free, Printable Vowel Coloring Pages with Short and Long Sounds

I am so excited to share with you these free, printable Vowel Coloring Pages. There are 10 coloring sheets covering the short and long sounds for vowels A, E, I, O, and U.

My five year old twins are beginning readers and are becoming familiar with short and long vowel sounds. They enjoy identifying the images on the Vowel Coloring Pages, saying the words out loud to hear the vowel sounds, and then coloring them, of course! Hearing the repetitive vowel sounds on each page seems to help them remember the sounds. I hope your kids find them just as fun and helpful.

Important Skills for Beginning Readers

Letter recognition and letter sounds, including vowel sounds, are important skills for learning to read. Knowing individual letters and letter sounds is very helpful when kids start putting letters together and blending them to make words.

Additionally, learning both upper and lower case letters is important, so I have included both forms in the Vowel Coloring Pages.

I find the information in this article “What parents needs to know about the research on how kids learn to read” so interesting. Check it out and let me know what you think.

There are 10 Vowel Coloring Pages included in the free printable, each dedicated to the short or long sound of A, E, I, O, and U. The pages include the upper and lower case of each letter to familiarize kids with the different forms of vowels.

Each Vowel Coloring Page includes 6-9 images of words that have that sound. I also made the decision to include the word that image represents, so there is no need to guess what the word is!

How we use the Vowel Coloring Pages

I thought it would be helpful to include how we find it most beneficial to use this printable resource. I am not an educator and none of this is professional advice. This is just what is working right now for us!

When we sit down to use the Vowel Coloring Pages, I do a few basic things with my kids.

First, I go over the vowel sound on the page by saying it a few times and asking my kids to say it with me. Then, we go over the names of the images on the Vowel Coloring Page, emphasizing the vowel sound it covers. After that, we’ll all spend time coloring the pages.

Sometimes we also spend a few minutes listening to / watching a short vowel song on YouTube. The videos are short and engaging and the songs are catchy enough that they help them remember the sounds. I tell my kids to listen for the vowel sound on the coloring page we’re using that day, and they get excited when they hear it. Here are a few of the vowel songs we like on YouTube, but there are many others available. Let me know if you have any you love and I will add it to the list.

  2. Scratch Garden Vowel Song
  3. The Short Vowel Song
