  1. The Kentucky Derby is a horse race that takes place on the first Saturday in May in Louisville, Kentucky.
  2. The race is called the “Run for the Roses” because the winner receives a garland of fresh red roses.
  3. The first Kentucky Derby took place in 1875.
  4. Secretariat was the fastest horse to ever win the Kentucky Derby in 1973. Secretariat’s nickname was “Big Red.”
  5. Kentucky Derby attendees traditionally wear fancy clothing. Women also often wear hats or fascinators on their heads.
  6. The race takes place at Churchill Downs, a race track known for its iconic twin spires.
  7. There is a series of events that lead up to the Kentucky Derby called the Kentucky Derby Festival. The events include a fireworks and air show called Thunder Over Louisville, a mini-marathon and marathon, a hot air balloon race, a steamboat race down the Ohio River, and more.
