Fun Facts About Hot Air Balloons
Learning about hot air balloons can be a great way to cultivate children’s curiosity. They may ask, “How do hot air balloons work?” or “When were hot air balloons invented?” Here are fun facts about hot air balloons that contain the answers to these questions and more.
- Hot air balloons work because warmer air is lighter and rises compared with cooler air. Hot air balloons have a burner that heats up the air and a fan that pushes it into the balloon. As the lighter hot air moves upward, the hot air balloon also begins to lift. Hot air balloons rise when the air inside them is heated, and they descend when the air inside them is cooled.
- The history of hot air balloons began more than two hundred years ago. The first hot air balloon took flight in 1783 and carried three animal passengers: a sheep, a duck, and a rooster. A few months later, two men from France were the first people to ride in a hot air balloon.
- People can control the direction a hot air balloon travels by using the wind direction and speed at different altitudes. Pilots study the wind before and during the flight in order to make decisions about how to steer the balloon.
- Hot air balloons are quite expensive to purchase. The cost of hot air balloons ranges from about $20,000 to more than $100,000.
- The largest hot air balloon festival in the world is the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival, which takes place in October each year.
