Fun Facts About Octopuses

How much do you know about the octopus? Here are 10 fun facts that help these activities come to life.

  • Octopuses have a total of three hearts– one larger and two smaller. The larger heart stops beating during swimming, making it easier for the creatures to crawl rather than swim.
  • Octopuses are smart! They can maneuver through mazes, unscrew jars, and use tools. They also have the ability to remember and predict.
  • The smallest octopus is the Wolfi octopus, measuring about one centimeter long. They have a relatively short lifespan of around six months.
  • The giant Pacific octopus is the largest octopus. It grows to about 16 feet and 110 pounds. The largest giant Pacific octopus ever found was more than 600 pounds.

  • The anatomy of an octopus is 90% muscle and no bones, and it can squeeze through extremely tight spaces.
  • Octopuses have skin cells that have the ability to rapidly change color, allowing them to camouflage in their environment.
  • The blue-ringed octopus produces a strong neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin that can kill humans.
