Nursery Rhymes are a Fantastic Learning Opportunity for Kids
I am so fascinated and inspired by the research that’s been done on the benefits of singing nursery rhymes with kids. Furthermore, I love spreading the word to parents and educators about these benefits because many of us are singing nursery rhymes anyways! We are doing an incredible thing for the kids in our care and we might as well give ourselves credit for it.
It has been shown that knowledge of nursery rhymes in young children increases their success in spelling and reading years later. Nursery rhymes are thought to increase a child’s phonological sensitivity and knowledge of rhyme and phonemes.
Reading Rockets emphasizes that rhyme and rhythm help kids hear the sounds and syllables in words. This ultimately helps them learn to read.
Free, Printable Nursery Rhyme Activities
These Free, Printable Nursery Rhyme activities are an easy and fun activity.
I chose to include three nursery rhymes in these pages – Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Hickory Dickory Dock, and Row, Row, Row Your Boat.
For each nursery rhyme, there are the following activity pages:
- Coloring Page featuring fun images and the nursery rhyme lyrics
- Prop Template so that kids can create a fun puppet or prop to use when they sing the nursery rhyme (*More on this below.)
- Cutting Practice Worksheet
- Prewriting Tracing Worksheet
- Patterning Activity
*For the Prop Template activities, there is a large image that kids can color, cut out and attach to a craft stick. These are great for using in circle time or another time you want to sing the nursery rhyme together. Kids love having something to hold. For more stability, I recommend printing the prop out on cardstock. Alternatively, kids can cut out the prop and then trace it on colorful paper. Then, they can cut out the colorful paper and attach it to the prop for stability.
